Proton Therapy Consultation

Dr. Mitin consulting with patient

The Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center offers proton therapy consultations for patients diagnosed with cancer. Proton therapy is useful in treating tumors that have not spread and tumors that are near important parts of the body such as near the eye, brain or spinal chord. Now patients have access to an expert opinion close to home, increasing their peace of mind and saving them time and money

A More Focused Radiation Therapy

Proton therapy has gained considerable attention due to the number of new proton centers opening up across the Unites States. There are inherent physical properties that make protons superior to the more standard available therapy in the world – photon radiation therapy. Proton therapy targets tumors with a greater precision while sparing nearby healthy tissues and minimizing side effects. A proton beam conforms to the shape and depth of a tumor, giving physicians more control on where to deliver the bulk of its cancer-fighting energy.

An Expert Opinion Close to Home

Currently, there are no proton therapy centers in the state of Oregon, but the Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center offers proton therapy consultation so patients can receive a personalized expert opinion about its possible benefits. Patients considering traveling outside of Oregon for proton therapy can also save time and money with direct physician-to-physician referrals and in-network coverage for their consultation.

Dr. Timur Mitin, medical director at the Tuality/OHSU Cancer Center, is an expert in the subject and provides proton therapy consultations. He underwent his training at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program in Boston – one of the oldest programs with proton therapy in the United States. After graduation, he treated patients with proton therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital. Today, he continues to refer patients to proton centers when this treatment modality can improve patients’ outcomes.
