Thanks for saving my life

When Tim Van Dyke felt a pain in his chest a year ago, little did he know that he was embarking on a journey from near death to health, thanks to providers and clinicians at Tuality Healthcare.

Van Dyke felt a twinge of chest pain early on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015. A quick call to 9-1-1 was followed by a trip to Tuality’s Emergency Department in Hillsboro.

An initial electrocardiogram (EKG) was conducted. While lying in bed in the ED, Van Dyke felt a sharper, more intense pain. That’s when the ED staff placed a call to Dr. Daniel Isenbarger, an interventional cardiologist with Hillsboro Cardiology.

A cardiac catheterization procedure found a nearly 100 percent blockage of Van Dyke’s coronary artery.  Dr. Isenbarger placed a stent in the left main artery and performed angioplasty procedures in three arteries.

“After the procedure, the doctor told me I was very lucky to be alive,” Van Dyke said. “Most people die from the blockage I had.”

Van Dyke returned a year after his surgery to say thanks. Brody Ferguson, Tuality’s director of cardiopulmonary services, received a phone call from one of the volunteers in the Tuality Seventh Avenue Medical Plaza building. A patient was here, the volunteer said, and wanted to thank Ferguson and his staff in person for saving his life.

Van Dyke told Ferguson he has changed his lifestyle and is much more fit than a year ago. He has changed his diet and dropped 35 pounds along the way. By all indications, he said, his health is much improved. He realizes he will never be 100 percent cured of heart disease.

He credits much of his improved fitness to sessions with the therapists at Tuality’s Cardiovascular Rehabilitation clinic. “I can’t say enough about them,” he said. “I was a patient and now we’re friends.”
