When a health complication loomed in the birth of their third child, Francis and Chelsea Ewing of Banks knew exactly where to turn for help Tuality Healthcare’s Family Birth Unit.
The Ewings originally planned to have their baby at a stand-alone birth center not connected to a full-service hospital. Then, Chelsea was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure, a high level of protein in urine and the potential for putting mother and child at risk.
That changed things in a hurry. The Ewings had heard good things about Tuality and made contact with staff at the Family Birth Unit and Dr. Erica Cunill of Tuality Obstetrics & Gynecology.
“We’ve had a great experience here, from the time we got here all the way through.” Frank Ewing
“Dr. Cunill did a good job of explaining here’s what we have to do to take care of you,” said Chelsea Ewing, a stay-at-home with two other children, ages 2 and 4. “She also asked us what we had in mind. She gave us some options instead of saying ‘This is how we’re going to do it.’”
The rest is history. The Ewings’ third child was born without complications.
Why did they choose Tuality? “It’s close, 15 minutes from our home,” said Frank, a professional firefighter. “We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback about Tuality from friends and family. They felt well taken care of and felt they had a good experience.”
“I wanted to focus on having my baby, not other things like when are they going to move us out of the birthing room,” Chelsea added.
The Ewings had their first child at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland; the second at St. Charles Hospital in Bend.
Two things stood out for the Ewings:
The kindness and knowledge of the nursing staff.
The efficiency with which they were handled after arriving at the hospital.
“It was 5 minutes from when we walked through the door and were in a birthing room,” Frank said. “We’ve had a great experience here, from the time we got here all the way through.”
“We’ve had excellent care here,” Chelsea added. “I’ve loved the care I received from all of the nurses.”
