Becoming a Volunteer

Hillsboro Medical Center is always interested in hearing from reliable and compassionate people who would like to help our patients on a regular basis. Placements are determinations are based upon the volunteer’s skills, interests, availability, and previous experience.

At this time, Hillsboro Medical Center is accepting new volunteer applications in the following areas:

  • 7th Avenue Medical Plaza Volunteers

    • Duties: Work at the Information Desk greeting patients and visitors as well as assisting with the discharge of patients using wheelchairs
    • Hours: 4-hour shifts available Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Main Hospital Entrance Volunteers (NEW!)
    • Duties: Work at the Information Desk at the Main Hospital to greet patients and visitors, monitor visitor traffic and report any concerns to Security.
    • Hours: 4 hour shifts available seven days per week. Priority is for weekend coverage from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Gift Shop Volunteers

    • Duties: Sell merchandise to staff and volunteers
    • Hours: 5-hour shifts available Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Hospital Patient Care Unit Volunteers
    • Duties: Stock supplies and rooms, assist staff and patients
    • Hours: 4-hour shifts available weekdays and weekends, flexible start times.

Onboarding Process time: 3-4 Weeks

Step 1: Check your eligibility

  • Are you at least 16 years of age?
  • Are you able to complete the onboarding process?
  • Can you commit to 26 shifts (6 months) of volunteering for 4 hours a week?
  • Are you able to interact effectively with patients and staff?

Step 3: Onboarding process

  • After the interview, if you are a good fit for an open volunteer position, you will receive an onboarding email that will outline everything you need to prepare for a role as a volunteer.
  • Once we receive clearance on the background check and volunteer health screen, you will then be scheduled for an onboarding meeting to officially become a volunteer.
  • Successful completion of health includes vaccine history of COVID-19, Measles (Rubeola), Rubella, Chickenpox (Varicella) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccinations, and Tuberculosis (TB) screening.

Step 4: Begin Volunteering

  • During the onboarding meeting, we will schedule you for your orientation shift(s) and any additional training, and issue you your uniform and ID badge.

Job shadowing opportunities are available in many departments, once the 100 hours minimum commitment is met.
