When the Volunteer Services department at Tuality Healthcare added up the numbers for 2009, the results were impressive.
Nearly 310 individuals volunteered for a variety of tasks at Tuality throughout the year, logging more than 5,030 hours in donated time.
They served in many roles, including providing information for visitors, working in the Gift Shop at Tuality Community Hospital, helping with clerical tasks, assisting in medical floors, and much more.
Demographic information showed that the volunteers represented a cross section of the community: The average age was 53, about 20 percent were students, and about two-thirds were women.
Volunteer drivers and escorts for Tuality Local Coach (TLC) posted some big numbers as well. They provided 2,484 individual rides for people in need of transportation to-and-from medical appointments, which added up to 14,298 miles.
TLC provides door-to-door transportation for people who have Tuality-affiliated doctor and hospital appointments. While it is a free service, donations from riders are accepted. During 2009, these donations more than covered the costs for gas and maintenance on the TLC vans.
“We had a very good year,” said Joyce White, Volunteer Services manager, Tuality Healthcare. “I want to thank our volunteers so much for committing their time and talents to Tuality and our community. Their work is greatly appreciated by all.”
