The Hillsboro Intermodal Transit Facility (ITF) has another award under its parking belt. It has been awarded the International Parking Institute (IPI) highest honor, “Best Design of a Parking Facility with Fewer than 800 Spaces” 2012 Award of Excellence. The IPI cited innovation, efficiency, sustainability and user-friendliness as key factors in the selection.
The ITF, a joint project of the city of Hillsboro, Tuality Healthcare and Pacific University, is a sustainably designed building which provides 794 vehicle parking spaces on five levels, includes ground floor commercial space, houses Portland Community College’s Hillsboro Education Center and is home to the region’s first bicycle commuter station, BikeStation Hillsboro. The ITF is next to a Blue Line MAX station.
The building is energy efficient and uses very low-energy LED lights, rooftop rainwater to maintain the landscape area and 252 roof top solar panels provide enough power to light the facility during daylight hours. 13 state-of-the-art electric vehicle charging stations are an additional sustainable feature.
“The City of Hillsboro is committed to sustainability and we definitely ‘walk our talk’. The ITF is one example of the work we do with our community partners to create a more sustainable hometown of the future, “said Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey.
According to Manny Berman, Chief Operating Officer and Administrator at Tuality Healthcare, “The Hillsboro Intermodal Transfer Facility has been a tremendous addition to the Hillsboro Health and Education District. In addition to the parking it provides for Pacific University, Tuality Healthcare, Portland Community College, Virginia Garcia Medical Clinic and Tri-met park-and-ride, the sustainable features of the facility represent our leadership in the region on developing sustainable projects.”
“Strong community partnerships are vital to ensure a vibrant quality of life for generations to come," Pacific University president Lesley Hallick said. "Civic engagement and sustainability are key pillars of Pacific University's mission, and we are fortunate to partner with like-minded entities in the City of Hillsboro and Tuality Healthcare to bring our mission to life."
The Intermodal Transit Facility is located between S.E. 7th Avenue and S.E. 8th Avenue in Hillsboro. The building, designed by LRS Architects and built by Skanska USA, has also received the 3rd place award for the Top Projects in 2011 from the Daily Journal of Commerce, Excellence in Concrete Parking from the Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association in 2010 and a 2011 Leadership Award for Sustainable Excellence from VHA Inc., a national network of not-for-profit health care organizations.
