Many mothers who wish to breastfeed with the help of a breast pump are scratching their heads over cost and insurance coverage changes required by the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act includes a provision requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of breastfeeding equipment. That provision took effect Aug. 1, 2010, although insurance companies could wait until the new plan year began Jan. 1 to start offering coverage.

Now that new plans are in effect, many moms have questions. The best place for answers in Washington County is Tuality Medical Equipment & Supply, Tuality’s durable medical equipment store located in the Tuality 7th Ave. Medical Plaza building at 333 SE 7th Ave.

TMES Manager Dave Nolan and his staff can help new moms navigate the confusing and frustrating path of insurance coverage, co-pays and the like. “We can work with your insurance company if there are problems quicker than other companies,” Nolan said of the service he and his staff can provide. “We’ve seen more customers wanting to use this coverage, and there’s lots of confusion that goes along with that.”

TMES stocks a number of types of electric and manual breast pumps. Nolen and his staff will help you decide on the right one for you.

Nolan and his staff can also help you sort through some of the following issues:

  • Does my insurance cover only manual pumps? Or will it cover more expensive electric pumps.
  • What are the co-pay and deductible requirements of my insurance?
  • What about renting a breast pump?
  • What is the “allowable amount” my policy will cover?
  • What if I’m an Oregon Health Plan member? Will it cover the cost of a breast pump?

Tuality Medical Equipment & Supply is located in Suite 1200 of the Tuality 7th Ave. Medical Plaza building. Reach them by phone at 503-681-1658.
